Vaccines protect young pets from serious infections, and regular deworming keeps them free of parasites. Here is what the first months usually look like.
A typical vaccination journey
- 6 to 8 weeksFirst core vaccines are usually given.
- Every 2 to 4 weeks, until about 16 weeksBoosters are repeated while the early protection a baby gets from its mother fades.
- 6 to 12 monthsA booster to complete the first series.
- Then regularlyOngoing boosters as your veterinarian advises. Ask us about rabies vaccination and local requirements.
Deworming and parasites
Young pets often carry worms, so deworming is usually repeated at regular intervals in the first months. Fleas and ticks also need regular prevention. Your veterinarian chooses the products and the dose for your pet's weight.
Do
- Keep a vaccination and deworming card and bring it to every visit
- Weigh your pet regularly, because parasite medicines are dosed by weight
- Ask us about flea and tick prevention for your pet
Do not
- Do not use a dog flea or tick product on a cat unless your veterinarian says it is safe
- Do not skip boosters or stop halfway through the series
What to bring to the first visit
- Any previous vaccination or medical records
- The food your pet currently eats
- Your questions about feeding, behaviour and toilet training
